This calligraphy – laden, very finely woven piece from Hereke near Istanbul precisely mimics the later 16th century pieces, now mostly in Turkish museums, from Kashan of the so-called “Salting Group”, The low-set black field displays wriggling, serpentine cloud bands, beneat a square-shouldered and notched ivory arch and red small flower spandrels. Cartouche and calligraphy borders. Calligraphy is generally Quranic in character. Top condition, a rug for the wall and to be prized and never walked on.
