Antique Hand Made Tabriz Persian Rug, 1920

This finely woven, NW Persian city rug shows a central rectangular portrait of Alexander the Great in an ivory field of trees, branches, arabesques, palmettes, flowers and running deer.
The main border features seven (and five repeats) historic Persian kings identified by inscriptions, all in variously shaped, generally squarish panels. Alexander is show against a light blue ground, with curtains gathered up at each side. He wears a crested classical Greek helmet and a military cloak. Clearly a one-off, special commission with a fine weave and in good condition. A wall-hanging instead of a floor rug.
