This unusually shaped piece, incomplete at one end, is too large for a chair seat or back and may have been part of a fire screen. The sandy beige ground shows a pictorial cartouche with scrolled edges, accented by birds, acanthus trumpets, a rose swag below and scallop-shell elements. Two C-shaped garlands focus attention on the central ellipse with three tussling dogs under a massive tree with an atmospheric structure scape in the distance. Straw yellow is an important detail tone. Good condition. 18th century.
